Post FIVE

As I stated in the first post, we begin the process of teaching and learning the day we are born. Each moment in our life has some validity of this process. Even those moments that we think make no impact on our lives.

Many of you know I am not one to talk about myself. This is especially true in the world of Faculty. Yavapai College has the BEST Instructors here. Many of them I admire. This admiration is for their character as well as their strengths of teaching. It can be very nerve racking for me to speak with them for the intimidation is real in my mind.

This Semester, I am trying more and more to chat with folks and ask questions of issues in the College as well as in the World. I am so grateful to each of them for never undermining my ignorance of a topic. Each person has graciously given his or her time and energy to helping me understand.

I have often steered clear of these conversations due to a possible confrontation. No. I do not like confrontations. No one does.  What I found most helpful is just communicating. A simple dialogue to hear a person’s side to the story. This helps me to find where the person is coming from with their thoughts and actions.  This then assists me to decipher the meaning of what is swirling around us at every given moment.

I thank all who have been there to supply me with their words of wisdom.
Thank you.

I am LEARNING every day, so that I may TEACH others.

Post Four!

Today I had my first course observation

Before it began, I was apprehensive

What I found was a good experience

The feedback provided was extensive

My class will be far better because of this

The changes will be eventful

Some old ideas became new again

These will make students’ successful

Overall I feel good about the time spent

Exchanging of ideas can be good

I am thankful for the time allotted

If you have not experienced this, you should.

I received some wonderful ideas

With this some tips and tricks

One thought was as simple as an application

In fact, I’m adding this into the mix

Post Three ;-D

Teaching and Learning (post three)

What a semester! In all the year’s I have been here at Yavapai, this is the second worse semester so far. I mean, if it could go wrong, it did. Through it all, I have kept some sense of humor. There were a couple of breaking-points. These involved tears and heavy hearts.

I am curious if this happens to fellow colleagues. It seems most up in building three, hold steady with their character. What do you do when life throws you these “things” and does not stop? Do you throw your hands in the air and shout?

A little secret for me is that I scream out the vehicle windows. Yep. The drive to and from Prescott Valley Five Days a Week allows me to yell at the top of my lungs. Scream out angry words. Spew out profanities. Make hand gestures at no one in particular. OK. That may be a little lie. About five minutes worth of shouting does it…Sometimes…

Even today started rough. It was myself, and my own attitude, which changed where this day, could have gone. Thank goodness, the mind was able to pull me out of the despair and self-pity. The mind and ZUMBA® did it!

What did this post have to do with teaching and learning?

Just as I stated in post one. We start teaching and learning the day we come into this world. Today was a teaching/learning moment for myself. Some days, this is all you need.

Now, a really cool video which does have a little to do with Teaching and Learning ;-D

This Week

This week in the land of Video Game Development, we started Scripting. This is a very scary place for many folks to venture. I can remember when I first ventured into these waters. This last word is how Bruce Kirkpatrick described the process of learning Programming Languages. I shared this with the students Wednesday.

They seemed to understand what I was saying. There were still those with the scowls on the brows. So, I told them of one of my “Programming” friends via the Virtual Environment. This lady can take any Programming Language and write whatever it is you need. Her view of this is, “It’s Poetry”.

Now, the first time I heard this, I thought, “She’s MAD”. When I really dived into programming, I found that this is so true. It is Poetry. Imagine the letters, numbers, and syntax coming to life. What more poetic can you ask for?

Pure Poetry…

Teaching and Learning

Life itself is all about this topic. As we enter the world, we begin to Teach and to Learn. This continues until the day we leave this Earthly plain.
Always Teaching and Learning.

In higher education, I found this process to be different for everyone. Some folks learn at a faster rate than others do. For myself, I often fall in that latter category. It seems that in my earlier years, an experience traumatized my brain to react to difficult situations in a “black it out” process. This moved into anything that was difficult; sports, reading, writing, and so many other areas…

This caused some tough times during my own transgression through the degrees and the certificates. It was not until recently that I was able to undo all the “black outs” that haunted me for so many years. I tell you this, as the experience created a completely new way to present material to students.

When you work with technology; something which changes on a daily basis, it is imperative that students can relate somehow…some way.  To help student open the window and let all the information in, I often find their comforts. These comforts can be in the form of books, movies, foods, and whatever else they happen mention throughout lectures.

For example, by relating Programming to a body of water, this can take a few students away from the fear of Programming Languages to being comfortable in understanding small portions. For Collisions and Physic, Fox Tails were used to explain the process of Triggers and Colliders in Game Engines. For Audio, we go into game Genres and how background music can make or break a game’s theme…or even the game. Imagine a Fantasy Theme with a Haunting Sound. Does not work folks.

By listening from Day One, and checking the Introductions Discussion repeatedly, I learn about the students and their worlds. Their worlds are where I try to dive into the communicate topics.

Thanks for listening.
Just threw this one together as I was late…Maybe something better next time ;-D

Reflections

It is a time of year where many persons sit and reflect on what they have accomplished throughout the past twelve months. Some folks become cocooned with emotions, which spiral out of control. Their world spinning and skidding into obstacles.

For me, I find myself reviewing my own life. I ask,

What have you done that was good?
Who have you helped?
What did you do that was a selfless act?

For these three questions, I do have answers; however, I feel I should have more. Does this make me a self centered, egotistical person? No. I do not believe I am. Trust me. At one time, my Ego ran the show. That was a time of craziness; darkness. No longer does this part of me stand in front to lead.

Yes. This passive aggressive soul steps to the forefront on occasion and the old self returns. When this happens, it can be very humorous; however, it can also be very painful. It is a fight for my Ego to know Love. My Ego is just Fear. I need to let that Ego go and bring Love into the Self.

So, at this time of the year, ask yourself, “What have you done that was good for someone else?”. If you cannot provide any answer here, you may wish to think about your world; your life; your “Self”. Do you chose Fear or Love?

Nine

A reflection for the last post
It is what I enjoy most

Not the reflection part
I state this from the heart

It is the last post
That I will be giving a toast

The time has been busy for sure
But, I didn’t mind the detour

It was all about the education
During this whole duration

This post will be brief
I know…That’s a relief

I thank TeLS for the opportunity
To bring this to the community

A challenge is always fun
When it can be done

I believe I fulfilled the “must”
If not, I am sure we can adjust

It’s been at times a pain
One I may not do again

Glad I get a Brunch
I could use a good munch

Thanks to all who dropped by my door
Some had never been there before

They marvel at the decorations
That keep me on track with my obligations

So to all of you I say
Thanks for letting me do this my way

Now a Random Video – No. Not Frank Sinatra!

Eight

The week has actually ended
and I failed to post

With a quick rhyming scheme
A couple minutes at most

With that in place
I make my way in haste

For today is Veteran’s Day
Olive Garden is where we’ll head for a taste

To our Veterans they serve
A free meal with a smile

For this service
We’ll drive a mile

Hubby and Dad I will take
for they both did fight

For my freedom to tell you this
It is my given right

Yes. This should be about education
I’ll try to bring some in

Maybe research the forgotten war
For Korea is where they both have been

I’ll jump in and grade a bit
This is something I do daily

It can sometimes bring about emotions
some assignments are total melee

The students continue to submit
The work that is creative

Hopefully, it is their brain
That gets stimulated

But I digress from my topic
Of this post being late

Hopefully TeLS will forgive me
I’ve been fairly good at any rate

Have a great Veteran’s Day
I say to everyone

Thanks a soldier for your Freedom
Without them, you would have none

Seven

I find it hard at times
To continue with these rhymes

It takes a bit of skill
When done it can be a thrill

To post something each week
Almost makes me out to be a geek

Always the topic should meet
Some academic treat

This one will be short
For there is really nothing to report

The students are mostly great
In fact, a high percentage at this rate

There was a little plagiarism
“Nipped it”, I say with optimism

It breaks my heart when this happens
The students they start the “slackens”

The culprits were called out
Then in a message to the class I did shout

Please do not waste my time
This plagiarism is a crime

Should I see it again
Your work will be in vain

From the course you will be dropped
Your degree could be locked

Be your own person
For going this route can only worsen

Be creative and use critical thought
Never place yourself in that spot

I want you to succeed
Not to be one to impede

Bring forth your brain
Make education your campaign

Six

To post or not to post.
This is the question I ask.

Comments are the focus this week.
This is the actual task.

I figured I could still write
Just a quick word or two.

No big deal to do a post.
t’s actually for me and not you.

I’ve been super busy these days.
Programn Review is up.

Paperwork has been sent to cirriculum.
Now I can do all my catchup.

I can tell you the process was daunting.
Quite the learning experience.

Each step another obsticle.
My pay off was my persistence.

I’ll stop now with the post.
As I am a bit behind

Need to start on Spring courses.
I do this so I am not in a bind.

A new text for VGD 221.
So, implemnting new assignments.

Even though this is taught by an adjunct.
It will be based on my refinements.

Now that random video. Rest in Peace Chris Cornell
